The European Parliament has initiated a major push to bring fairness and transparency to traineeships across the European Union. Lawmakers have raised concerns that thousands of young Europeans are being used as low-cost or unpaid labour under the label of “internships” or “traineeships,” without proper pay, job security, or clear learning opportunities.
Under the proposed rules now being drafted, the EU aims to ensure that all trainees receive proper financial compensation, clearly defined job responsibilities, and a structured learning framework. The move is also intended to prevent the growing misuse of traineeships by employers seeking to replace regular workers with unpaid interns.
Members of Parliament argue that young graduates entering the job market should not be exploited in the name of gaining experience. The upcoming regulations are expected to set minimum standards for working hours, learning outcomes, and pay to provide better protection across member states.
The proposed law is likely to be debated further before full approval, but its introduction marks a significant step toward protecting youth employment rights across Europe.
